Al's Spotlight on Joe Jeeper's Liberty

How did you modify your Jeep Liberty?

I started with a 2” 4WD Hardware Lift and put 31” Mickey Thompson Baja Radials on. I cut the front plastic liner of the front wheel wells and hammered over the pinch weld for clearance then applied black silicone to any gaps and then sprayed with rubberized undercoating. I then found a tire size I wasn’t aware of  LT235/85R16 which was available in Goodyear MTR’s. I bought a set of 5 of them shimmed out the rear spare carrier so it would fit on my stock alloy rim. I went 4 wheeling with Blue Mtn Jeep Alliance and on trail 25 at Paragon I had all kinds of rear rubbing and a tad on the front. I trimmed out the plastic on the rear doors where I saw the tire rubbed and repositioned the bulb seal to retain the seal. Then I filled the gap in the flare with expando foam and coated it with rubberized undercoating.  This wasn’t enough for the 32” tires though. I went to the first Jeff Daniels Jeep Show and afterward made an appointment for May 23rd, 2006 to see Dan at Jeff Daniels who put my Jeep on the Lift and engineered my 4” Lift by shimming my already lengthened front strut assembly, installing Jeepin’ by Al's upper control arms with grease able ball joints, installing lower Moog grease able ball joints, then grinding out the extra material under the A-arm pockets so the control arms would have maximum droop.  We found that the axle shaft hit the CV tube end at maximum droop so Jeff Daniels cut 3/8” off the CV tube eliminating the contact at full articulation. That finished off the front ½ of the lift. (plus an alignment)  For the rear they  modified my lower spring perches so they would accept TJ springs  by skyjacker that gave the rear 4” of lift. (you do not need to do all that, Jeepin Al has custom 4" rear springs) A bracket was made to allow the drop from the wishbone above with an adjustment screw to align the driveshaft.  That finished the rear. That bracket is now the refined “link extension” available from Jeepin Al.  I have had it off road and it performs great. I have since had Jeff Daniels remove my trac-loc and install a Powertrax rear locker which has made my vehicle perform like a whole different animal. I now have over 15,000 miles on my rig with these mods and no problems and no regrets!

I have a 4 X Doctor rear Diff. guard which was installed with my Powertrax Locker, 4-Mopar skid plates and Back Country STL STL tube steps. I like them they set up higher than other brands and allow me access to my roof basket and Hi-Lift Jack.

I have won 2 Trophies at PA Jeeps All Brands Jeep Show, 1 Trophy at The Pocono Jeep Cavalry Four Wheel Drive Truck Show, and 2 Trophies at the Jeff Daniels Jeep Show.

Marlin Gehman of Jeepin’ by Al and the Jeff Daniels Crew are a Class Act and do not do any modifications without thoroughly testing the components and their ability to perform. I highly recommend both Companies. In the future I’m going to add the New Jeepin’ by Al components and go up to 6 or 8” of lift.

With these changes how much lift did you get?

My lift is 4 inches

What tires do you have?

Goodyear MTRs LT235/85R16

What wheels do you have?

The stock Liberty Wheels

What lift kit did you use?

A lift custom built by Jeff Daniels Custom Jeeps.

Did you use wheel spacers?

I have installed 5mm wheel spacers (3/16” thick) to allow some clearance anything larger would cause the tires to catch when stuffing them in the pockets during articulation. I need to find the proper wheel offset for state inspection. On the RTI ramp the rear articulation is phenomenal for a Liberty. I was up 55” on the ramp with the other 3 tires touching ground.

Did you do anything with the axels?

We found that the axle shaft hit the CV joint tube at maximum wheel droop so Dan had the face cut 3/8” shorter. I have 15,000 plus miles on these CV joints.  I have since had Jeff Daniels remove my trac-loc and install a Powertrax rear locker.

Can I buy a kit to make my KJ look like yours?

Yes, you can with Jeepin by Al's 4" lift,

Jeff Daniels Custom Jeeps worked with Jeepin by Al to make this kit.
